Hazel version 6 has the same core features as version 5, but adds new capabilities.

On-the-Fly Text Recognition

A rule can examine the text within graphics and PDFs if they have not been OCRed. See the “Contents” topic in  Attribute Reference .

Read Password-Protected PDFs

A rule can open password-protected PDFs as long as you supply the password (one per rule) in advance. See the “Contents” topic in  Attribute Reference .

Revert Changes to Files

If a rule has made certain modifications to a file or folder (such as renaming it or changing tags) and you want to undo those changes, you can now do so via Finder’s contextual menu. See  Revert a File .

Custom List Attributes

A new Custom List attribute enables a rule to create a list based on matching attributes (such as tags or contents) and then reuse that list in an action. See  Custom List Attributes .

Lock and Unlock Files

An action can now lock or unlock a file. See the “Toggle lock” topic in  Action Reference .

Pause Action

You can now insert a pause for an arbitrary period of time in a sequence of rule actions. See the “Pause” topic in  Action Reference .

Improved Number Matching

The “number” attribute in match patterns can now include thousands separators, decimal points, or both (see  Using Match Patterns in Conditions ). On output, thousands separators can be configured on a case by case basis while decimal values are passed to the output (see the “Attribute Formatting” topic in  Using Pattens in Actions ),

Maximum Length

You can now set the maximum length of an attribute (such as a filename) in an action. See the “Attribute Formatting” topic in  Using Patterns in Actions .

Easier Debugging

If you try to save a rule that has one or more errors, Hazel now highlights the problematic conditions or actions. See the “Create a Rule” topic in  Create a Rule .

Reset Counters

If you use a counter when renaming items and you later want to reset that counter to zero for a given folder, you can do so with a contextual menu command. See the topic “Resetting a Counter” on the  Using the Counter Attribute  page.

Rule Preview Additions

Rule preview now shows the file being previewed up top. When previewing contents, contents are scrollable and searchable. Autocomplete will use text from your previewed document when matching against contents.
