Hazel on Twitter
I’ll say up front that I’m skeptical of this whole Twitter thing. Instead of me being a grump about it though, I’m trying an experiment. I put up a profile for Hazel for those who can’t resist getting micro-updates on what’s going on with Hazel. If you want to see what’s going on with development or other related news doled out in little SMS-sized chunks, then check out user Noodle_Hazel .
Hazel’s not the only Mac software on the Twitter circuit. Recently acquired MarsEdit is already there. And if you want Twitter updates on your desktop, there’s Twitterrific.
So, we’ll see how it goes. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome.

Just signed up, twitterrific client looks GREAT, but as a service I can tell I’ll be bored of this rather quickly — sad to say considering I’ve made exactly ONE update. I suppose it dispenses with the pleasantries of ‘what’s up?’ since I already know… but alas I do not have free unlimited sms, and spend several hours a day working on code for the man that I can’t discuss… ya this will have a short shelf life…

So like a son that has learned from his father… how do you know you don’t like it without even trying it? Of course he was referring to food, which is much more difficult to be upfront and intuitive about. But Twitter… Clearly a “project” like Hazel under twitter is a lightweight development log that doesn’t require the overhead of people plugging your web server.
But as an individual? I don’t get it. Is IM, Freenode, your blog, appcasting, etc not good enough? Hell I even use flickr as a blog at times because pictures are often worth far more english then I am willing to write.

It’s not something clear and upfront — erm.. and I type this Wozniak chimes in with “Humming ‘Rathole’ jingle” above my code window… I can just picture 400+ followers getting interrupted from their task with this important piece of information, until the next one…

Yeah, I’m still not convinced that it’s desirable on the personal level but I think it has potential as a mini-RSS reader/news ticker. Personally, I don’t feel the need to know what my friends are doing every minute of the day but the occasional update on some project I’m interested in works for me.
Ultimately, it’s about the content but it’s hard to say whether Twitter content will become more than trivial updates on people’s whereabouts. The short message size does seem to encourage it but we’ll see how it goes.
