[Solved] Hazel stuck — not loading rules

Hello,

As an infrequent user of Hazel, I needed it today and noticed it’s not working any more. I don’t know for how long it’s been like this.

What happens: when I open Hazel, it first tells me this:

Welcome to Hazel
Thanks for starting the 14-day trial.
Would you like to load some sample
rules to get yourself acquainted with
Hazel?

Then it tells me this

Rules Not Loaded
You can load the sample rules at any
time by selecting the "Load Sample
Rules" item in the action menu.

When I go into the license section (Hazel, License…), it shows my license correctly.

My Rules don’t show, but I can import them.

What’s worse is that since I could import the rules, I thought I had solved the problem and added a new one, which wasn’t perfectly configured and directed Hazel to move objects to a Trash folder in iCloud that apparently doesn’t exist. I changed the rule, but it wouldn’t run any more.

In the log file, I find block over and over again:

I’ve tried activating the Debug-logging, but nothing new appears in the Debug-log.

I also tried killing Hazel with the Activity Monitor, but it didn’t work. I also restarted my Mac, you never know, and it didn’t work either. I’m on MacOS Sequoia 15.0.

Hopefully you can help me.

All the best!

Is it only the OneDrive trash that is causing problems?

No, Hazel is not working at all, and I can’t get it back to work. Tried all the things mentioned above (restarting, etc.). Also can’t close Hazel. Even when closing the helper and then the main window, there’s still a Hazel Notifier in the activity monitor that is running and that I can’t kill.

By the way, I don’t know what it’s doing with the OneDrive Trash, I don’t remember setting any rule that operates in the OneDrive Folder.

Can you go through the full troubleshooting guide here? https://www.noodlesoft.com/kb/hazel-tro ... ing-guide/

Post screenshots of each diagnostic.

Unfortunately, I’m not really sure I understand exactly what diagnostic you’re looking for. I can’t access my rules, can’t stop Hazel when it’s running, can’t stop the Hazel notifier, the debug mode doesn’t stay checked. I didn’t do anything in particular, but I fear my installation is seriously messed up. I made screenshots but somehow I can’t post them.

(not ideal for other people looking for a solution later on, but I didn’t have any better idea)

Screenshots are showing as not available.

You said you imported rules which is why I suggest going through the troubleshooting guide. There are several tests there and I need screenshots of the results of each one.

Here is another try to send you these screenshots:

Hopefully it works now!

About the importing: before this problem happened, I never imported any rule. When I started getting all these weird messages, and seeing that my rules had disappeared, I imported my previous rules from the .hazelrules file in the Hazel folder in the Library. The rules appeared, and I could test them (Preview-Mode), but they didn’t work, and they disappeared after the next fresh start of Hazel (after a reboot for instance).

Hopefully you can help, have a nice day!

I suggest doing the following:

- Quit Hazel
- Move the Library/Application Support/Hazel directory somewhere safe.
- Launch Hazel. This will re-create that directory
- Re-add the folders.
- Import the rules files back in.

Hello,

OK, that’s what I did, but the result was not great. The main problem is that I still can’t close the Notifier and the Helper, even when trying to force close in the activity monitor. After removing the files from the Hazel folder in the Library, I got a weird result where Hazel would kind of start and stop, which results in a yellow blinking in the interface. Somehow my installation is seriously messed up, but it’s difficult to get it to stop, since I can’t kill the app in the activity monitor. Here are some screenshots.

Hello again,

I don’t know what happened, but something is not going well with my installation.

What I found out, is that the only way of force closing Hazel without it being relaunched automatically is to delete the program, and then force closing. After completely deleting the program, including the folder in the Library and the Hazel plist, I reinstalled Hazel (with Homebrew this time), and the same thing happens again:

in parallel there are between three and four Hazel-processes in the activity monitor:

I have therefore uninstalled Hazel again, hoping we’ll find a solution.

Have a nice day!

Not sure if using Homebrew is a good way to do things here. I suggest the following procedure:

- Put Hazel in the trash. Make sure you put all copies of Hazel you have anywhere on your system.
- Open the trash, right-click on Hazel, and select Delete immediately.
- Reboot
- Install Hazel.

See if that changes anything.

Thank you for your reply. Did all this (including the installation without homebrew), without success, unfortunately. All the same as before, including the Hazel Helper running at 100 % CPU, and the blinking, etc.
Somehow looks like a permission issue, but I might be mistaken. Didn’t change any permission. But I updated to MacOS Sequoia (15.0), I don’t know if it’s related.

Edit: some additional info. I saw that Hazel didn’t recreate a new settings folder in the Library. I don’t know why, maybe it’s normal (I checked after installing and opening Hazel for the first time). I also checked if Hazel had the full disk access permission, and it has.

There is no Hazel folder under Application Support? That indicates a permissions issue. Are you able to create folders there without being prompted for a password?
