Hazel 5 runs no rules anymore after update Thu Nov 19, 2020 2:11 pm • by mabi
macOS 10.15.7

- upgrade from Hazel 4 to 5
- rules were migrated
- HazelHelper never runs

- I added Hazel to:
- Security & Privacy - Accessibility
- Security & Privacy - Full Disk Access

system.log get's flooded by this error:

How did you install Hazel? Did you double-click it in the dmg or did you drag it into a folder and run it from there?

I have the same problem. I installed it by double clicking the icon. But nothing was installed after that, so I drew the icon into my Apps folder too.

Also when I start up my mac, it always wants to install Hazel. If I run "Run Rules Now" I get a message "Hazel has been stopped" and it does not run the rules at all. when I then click the button "start Hazel", nothing happens but I can't click "run rules now" any more. It's very frustrating to be honest. Version 4 was running smoothly without problems. Now, it doesn't run at all.

I dragged it into the apps folder and ran it from there. Is this the problem?

Same issue here. Tried all potential options how to install, migrate etc - no luck.

As Hazel is not even moved to the application folder for me it seems that the install fails at some point.

Same problems as the others. I dragged Hazel into the Applications folder and ran it from there. I have also completely uninstalled using CleanMyMac and reinstalled and the problem remains.

In Console, I get the following messages repeated:

- Could not find and/or execute program specified by service: 149: Could not find a bundle of the given identifier through LaunchServices: 86Z3GCJ4MF.com.noodlesoft.HazelHelper
- com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (86Z3GCJ4MF.com.noodlesoft.HazelHelper[2571]): Service exited with abnormal code: 78
- com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (86Z3GCJ4MF.com.noodlesoft.HazelHelper): Service only ran for 0 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 10 seconds

Hello,

I was also running very smoothly under 4. I have the same problem. No rules will run at all.

Update

On further investigation, I've found that rules will run if I build them from scratch. I have about a 60-70 rules altogether. That's just not possible for me to allocate time to.

Another Update

Rebooting Mac seems to have solved this.

I'm running into this problem, too. I installed using the installer. My rules appear to have successfully migrated. And they work if I tell Hazel to "Run Rules". But it doesn't seem to be watching the folder.

Please make sure you are talking about the same issue here. We are talking about the helper not running. If you do not see the mustard colored notice at the top of the window, you have a different problem. Please post in a separate thread after going through the troubleshooting guide: https://www.noodlesoft.com/kb/hazel-tro ... ing-guide/

As for the helper not running, please post the following:

- macOS version
- Did you install by double-clicking in the DMG or dragging it to a folder?
- If you do try double-clicking in the DMG, does it try to install?
- Also, make sure you are running Hazel 5.0.1

If you are willing to run a test build, email in to support as I want to either try extra logging or some possible fixes.

Hi Mr Noodle,

thanks for your quick replies. After uninstalling everything Hazel related and a reboot i installed Hazel from the DMG, that worked fine this time. Then i've added the same directories to hazel, like in the previous version and imported the rules, which i've exported as a backup before the update process.
I think most of your users get confused by the message "Double-click to install or drag it to a folder". Most Mac users are used to drag an app to the apps folder to install it. Perhaps only removing this message "or drag it to a folder" could save you a lot of support... only an idea.

But i have a new problem: My rules work like they did with Hazel 4, but i have to force the folder scan manually, every time i add a files into the watched folders. Only when i choose "Run Rules Now" my rules became processed, when i don't force the scan process, absolutely nothing happens. What can i do? What do you need to know, to give me a hint?

I *love* Hazel, but am experiencing the same problem. The rules work fine if I manually force them to scan the folders, but they won't run automatically.

I've experienced the same issue on all three of my machines:
- iMac 5k 27" (2017) running Catalina 10.15.7
- MacBook Air M1 (2020) running Big Sur
- MacMini (late 2012) running High Sierra 10.13.6

- Double-clicked the DMG and it installed
- Running Hazel 5.0.1

Thanks in advance for your help,
-Elliott

Both

As far as I can tell, it just launches the application from the image. I really see no indication anything installed.

- Also, make sure you are running Hazel 5.0.1
I am running 5.0.1

Please post any issues about rules not running automatically in another thread. This thread is about the helper not running. If you do not get the notice at the top of the window about this, then do not post here. Best solution is to email in to support after going through the troubleshooting guide here: https://www.noodlesoft.com/kb/hazel-tro ... ing-guide/

@mabi: Dragging to another folder should work but it looks like a bug in the OS that I may have to work around. Glad that at least that part is working now.

It opens. Then I get a message, that the PrefPane needs to be uninstalled (which I allow). But there's no App in the App Folder. Then I drag the App into the App folder and start it. Then I get the message "Hazel has been stopped". I click "Start Hazel". Then I import and sync the rules and try to start them manually. Nothing happens.

- Also, make sure you are running Hazel 5.0.1
I did

I miss the way Hazel used to just work. Now it runs when I tell it to. The rule matcher confirms that certain rules match, but they're not acted upon until I initiate a run-rules.

On matters of more information, I uninstalled Hazel 5.0.1 completely, archiving the rules first. Reinstalled completely. I now have to load each folder and their rules again. Didn't know that, and I'm in the middle of a workload. My bad for doing an update during this time. But I miss Hazel a lot. I haven't got the time to do lots of troubleshooting, but will take a few minutes out to let you know I'm in the midst of this too.
