Hazel v6 Not Working After Install Wed Oct 23, 2024 1:05 pm • by dealtek
Hi,

On sonoma - update from v5 - I added my v6 license and even rebooted and Hazel v6 starts but is empty and no windows etc.

How do I get this working and my v5 rules back?

Can you do the following?

- Launch Console
- Make sure your machine is selected in the left sidebar under Devices
- Enter Hazel into the search field and press return
- Click the message in the middle of the window to start streaming.
- Launch Hazel
- Post/send the log messages that appear.

Thanks for your help. Before I saw your current suggestions, in version five

- I backed up all the rules in a folder.

- Then I removed Hazel folder from application support and also your items from the preference folder (I put them on an external disk)

- then deleted the app v6

- then reinstalled the app (without trying to upgrade from version five)

- now the app opens correctly - however it is empty

- when I tried to import my rules - they are not tied to the particular folders any more - so this is not helpful

- is there a way that I can resurrect all the previous folders and rules - from version five?

- I do have a Time Machine back up from yesterday (in addition to the folders I moved to an external disk) - if that would be helpful

Did you move or copy the files from preferences and application support? If you moved them, then of course there will be nothing in Hazel when it launches.

Yes I did – but I moved them back and it said there was problems with some of the folders so that did not work.

stopping and starting hazel when needed...

- then I tried restoring information from time machine yesterday and even reverted back to hazel v5 install - and that also had some kind of folder errors.

- it is possible that some of the folders in Hazel were attached to external hard drives that were not currently attached - so that could be part of the problem

- also I tried importing my saved rules but they were not tied to various folders so that is not helpful at all.

- I ended up with a blank working version of version six

- so aside from creating everything from scratch all over again and trying to remember what rules were tied to what folders - do you have any suggestions how to get this up and running again?

- is there anyway to expedite getting this back up and running?

You will need to import the rules, see which ones they are, then move them to the proper folder.

Update - after some trial and error - I was able to go into Time Machine backups and restore the older version 5 and related Folders and rules AND APP.

- then I noticed there was some broken folders and rules so I updated and cleaned them up or removed them

- then after reboot everything looked like it was working well in v5

- next I tried to update Hazel version six and it said it was going to update the existing hazel file

- I opened Hazel v6 and the window was empty with none of my folders or rules showing up from version five.

- so I attempted to trash Version 6 and then just drag a fresh copy v6 in rather than install it.

- however same problem - v6 opens with none of my pre-existing Hazel folders or rules – Just empty

- Q: so how can I get version 6 working on Sonoma since I have tried it many times with all failures so far.

At this point, it's best if you re-construct things as described above. Re-create your folder list and import the rules files.

I might try that - but before I do ...

- I removed v5
- installed (dragged ) v6
- opens to empty window and no hazel in menu bar - but ALSO

- after I add v6 licence - it does not save it
- i can not even create 1 manual folder - just asks to licence
- seems like permissions? but full folder access is on for hazel and helperfile
- any ideas how to fix this

yes but at this point - I removed all v5 items and installed v6 and recreated everything from scratch. So at this point it's all working after this elaborate restore (trying many other options that failed)...

Is it possible to redownload V5 ? My Mac mini is apparently too old to handle V6 so Im left with no Hazel !

even though I kept a copy of v 5.0 I was not able to update it to the latest because updater just took me back to v6. Maybe Mr_Noodle has a solution for this?
