hazel stopped working unless 'forced'

I have been using Hazel for some while with great success. However, it no longer seems to run automatically. The first folder I have done detailed review of is 'Downloads'. The 'eye' button show the rules that each file should trigger. Pressing 'Run Rules now', runs everything as it should happen. But if I don't force run nothing happens for hours on end.

My logs since staring the computer (from a powered off state) say ...

Try the following:

Export the rules for that folder
Remove the folder from Hazel
Add the folder back in to Hazel
Import your rules back into the folder. Re-enable them as necessary.

In a round about way, my first post clumsily tried to explain that I had already done that without any success.

Are you still getting the undeployed folder messages? That indicates that the folder is not being tracked by Hazel.

Another thing to check: look at Library/PreferencePanes both at the top of your drive and under your home folder. There should only be one copy between the two locations. If there are multiple copies, delete all but the one under your home folder. Reboot after doing this.

I rebooted.

The for a second time I:

Export the rules for that folder
Remove the folder from Hazel
Add the folder back in to Hazel
Import your rules back into the folder. Re-enable them as necessary.

I checked my logs, which now say:

I checked both Library/PreferencePanes and only the one in my home drive has Hazel.prefPane. The eye button still correctly recognises files as passing the Hazel rules, but Hazel doesn't process them (mainly simple stuff like moving to trash or moving to another folder. The root library PreferencesPanes has just Java and Flash panes.

Any other thoughts?

Is the Downloads folder an another drive? Also, what happens if you rename the Downloads folder then rename it back?

The Downloads folder is the Mac system downloads folder in my user area. It is in the internal system drive of my Mac. For this reason I cannot rename the folder.

I deleted the Download folder in Hazel. I then created a new empty folder on my desktop called 'test'. I copied the contents of the Download folder over. Then in Hazel I added the test folder, imported all the rules from the test folder and the eye button confirms that the rules are matched in Hazel for the test folder. Then nothing happens. The log says ...

I should also add that as far as I can see from the logs that none of the watched folders have been processed for several days now. The log at the point when the last file was processed successfully says:

I have just had a thought. In the logs at the point when it seems to have stopped working, all the successfully processed actions refer to something called Hazelworker, yet all the lines that have since failed refer to Hazel Helper. Is this of any significance?

HazelHelper and hazelworker are separate processes and that isn't a concern.

I find it very odd that Hazel loses track of the folder right off the bat. There is definitely something strange going on here. Can you try something else? Launch Activity Monitor. Select HazelHelper and do "Sample Process". Email support with the output of that.
