I posted a new post and assumed I would just receive email notifications for every update, but it turns out I need to press a small "Subscribe to this topic" link or something at the bottom afterward or check the button "Notify me when a reply is posted" on the initial submit; one of the 5 checkboxes at the bottom that I didn't even care to read and that by default is *unchecked". The default state for this setting on a new post in my opinion should be checked.

Will consider it but usually people don't like unexpected emails. If you didn't see the option to turn it on, many others will not see the option to turn it off.
