Condition with tags does not work reliably Sat May 26, 2018 4:52 pm • by bosie
Hi,

for some reason, my tag based rules are firing too often.
https://www.evernote.com/l/AAUxe2etoPhA ... Gbn3PL_LC0

I check the file with Preview and the condition is never met but fires 60 seconds prior to it for some reason. The applescript has been running on the file a few times now already, every time the tag is on the file. It happens on various files, they change all the time. Not every time the folder is scanned is does the file trigger the rule. I don't get what i am doing wrong or is this a bug?

from the hazel logs:
2018-05-20 12:52:46.042 hazelworker[41139] FILE.mp4: Rule Add to OF matched.
2018-05-21 20:19:26.813 hazelworker[52367] FILE.mp4: Rule Add to OF matched.
2018-05-26 21:25:47.243 hazelworker[26243] FILE.mp4: Rule Add to OF matched.

Is it possible something is removing the tag? Or is the file being re-written or re-copied there?

I don't use any tags other than with hazel.
The only file operations I do are with hazel. Once the tag is applied, hazel shouldn't touch the file. Except : The only thing that happens is that the color is reset every day with hazel

Is it possible the file is being written out again? Something seems to be triggering it and if the file is overwritten, it's possible that would clear the tags as well.

The workflow is:
1) download the file to ~/Downloads
2) Hazel picks it up and moves it to ~/Docs (rule on ~/Docs)
3) Hazel picks that up and moves it into ~/Docs/movies (rule on ~/Docs/movies)
4) Hazel picks it up from there and moves it into ~/Docs/youtube
5) Hazel picks it up and runs an applescript + adds a tag

nothings writes to ~/Docs, let alone ~/Docs/youtube (other than Hazel). There is no log entry indicating that Hazel writes the file again once it is there. I can't see what would manipulate the files.

Turn on debug logging as shown here: https://www.noodlesoft.com/kb/hazel-debug-mode/

Post a log excerpt after that. Hopefully that should shed more light on the issue.

I have had plenty of files that got triggered today, i caught one right when it happened. it seems the more files hazel copies over to that directory, the more often it gets triggered for some reason. i have an hour of logs for that file prior to the event, can i sent it to you via email or something slightly more private?

Yes, you can email them in to support. Click on the "Contact Support" button in Hazel's "Info" section and attach it there.
