problems with network drive (Windows Home Server)

I have a MacBook Pro where I'm running Hazel, iFlicks, iDentity, etc. I'm doing all of the processing on the Mac, but I have a Windows Home Server where I download the files (and eventually want to store them there). I think I finally have the process working pretty well to basically move from the WHS, process, move back to WHS and add to iTunes. Here are the problems I'm having:

1) Sometimes when I'm copying large movie files over using Hazel, the process is very slow. It looks like it's copied it, but in the logs it shows the file as being 'busy' for a very long time.

2) I don't seem to be able to change a color label on a file on the WHS. Even when I go in through Finder and change it, it never sticks. The way I understand Hazel to work is that that it is really necessary to change to color label once you start 'working' on the file so that it doesn't reprocess. Also, I don't want it trying to reprocess over and over (which it seems to be doing).

Thanks for any help!

Not sure on the copying but if you are having problems with color labels, use spotlight comments instead. So if process a file and dont want it reprocessed, instead of change color label do an add comment like "processed" overwriting existing comments. Then in your processing rule, add a condition that says comment is not "processed"

See how that works for you.

Thanks DHY! It seems to be a problem with certain files on the WHS. I tested on a couple of others and the color label change worked fine. Sometimes one file in a folder will work and another won't (so I wouldn't think it was a permissions issue). I tried the Spotlight Comments and it has the same issue.

If the server is Windows based, it may not support certain Mac filesystem features like color labels and comments. If it is working some of the time, then it's possible it's a permissions issue. Make sure you have write permissions to the folder containing the file you want to change. In general, though, because of the filesystem mismatch, there will be problems.

As for #1, I'm not clear what the problem is. How large are the files? Is Hazel actually copying them or is it not copying them because the file is busy? I emailing your logs to support. Go to the "Info" pane and click "View Log". Then click on "Contact Support". Search the logs for the file in question and paste those messages into the email window and send.

Thanks.

Was this issue ever resolved?
I have the latest Hazel on the latest Macbook Pro (loaded), and it takes 5 or more seconds for Hazel to process and move .jpg to a network share. I normally can copy at around 200 - 300 MB per sec over WiFi.

Can you provide the info I asked of the other user?

Here is a sample of a couple of photos that were moved to a NAS.
There were a couple hundred more, but if you follow Hazel notifications, or watch the logs, it was taking 5 or 10 seconds for each photo to be processed and moved. I have a very fast network and NAS, normally copying is around 200 - 300 MB from this MacBook Pro 16" / 64GB RAM / i9 8 core / 4TB SSD.

Please let me know what else I can do to assist?

The timestamp on the logs don't seem to show that. Can you show me one that better illustrates the problem?

I don't know that the logs will help; all I know is while I watching the download folder on my Mac, the files are removed at around every 5 to 10 seconds. In other words I can count 1 thousand 1, 1 thousand 2, etc, and it normally takes 5 or 10 seconds.

So while I would expect 100 jpgs averaging 75kb would move pretty quick (a couple a second), I literally can stare for a couple of minutes before they are all moved.

I will see if i can download a group of pics, clear the log, and what the log shows; other than that any other thoughts? Maybe it's taking a while for Hazel to validate what is on the NAS side of things (duplicates, etc?)?

You'll need to tell me the precise second the file is downloaded so I can compare to the logs. It may not have to anything to do with transfer times but instead something else.

I don't know what was going on but my WiFi was running slow, and rebooting fixed the issue.

Thank you.
