Can Hazel Read Saved Emails. Thu Apr 27, 2017 12:11 pm • by dorich
Question:
My initial experiments suggest that Hazel cannot emails saved as .eml to a folder, is that correct.

Background:
I'm working on a process to save emails from mail.app to DevonthinkPro.
I'm using Hazel as the final step to move the email from the folder into DevonthinkPro
I can accomplish this if I save the email as .rtf or .pdf but I'm experimenting with just saving the email in raw form.
With my draft Hazel process when I run the "Preview" it appears that Hazel cannot read anything inside the email, not the address, nor any of the content.

Is my assumption that Hazel cannot read the email correct?
A related question is "What does the parameter "Source URL/Address" refer to? In the manual the explanation is as follows
This is the URL or email address the file came from. Note that only certain programs store this information, such as Safari and Apple Mai

However, if Hazel can't read an email its not clear to me how this would be used.

Thanks

It depends on the specific email format. Have you tried checking the contents of the email files in Hazel's preview?

Source URL/Address uses metadata, so is totally independent of whether Hazel can read the contents. It's based on the "Where froms" field which you can view in Finder.

Thanks for your response.

As noted in my original posting, it was through "Preview" that I discerned the problem. The rules panel indicates that there is no match for a particular phrase or email address. When I click on the red cross to expose the content of the email I can see the content and the email address I've used in the rule. So I'm unclear what's happening.
It's my assumption that if I can see something in the panel that exposes the content of the document (in this case an email) that I should be able to use that data in my rule setting. Is that an incorrect assumption?

I'm unclear what you mean by the email format. Are you referring to the application that is storing and presenting the mail - in this case mail.app.
If you're referring to the incoming mail then all my email is IMAP. If you're referring to something else then its beyond my ken and perhaps you can point in the direction of a reference so that I can understand this better than I do.

Thanks.

I mean the format of the saved file and the associated file extension.

If you can see the contents in the preview, then yes, you should be able to match against it. If it's not matching then the problem is probably with your pattern.

I might have missed a process requirement in the OP, but doesn't DTPO's included Mail archive plugin http://www.macdrifter.com/2013/10/archiving-with-devonthink.html already do what you need without employing Hazel? You can save the original .eml file and, optionally, any included attachments.

I use Hazel to automate as much as I can but the manual process in DTPO is not burdensome if done, say, once a month.
