Any way to "Lock" or Protect my Hazel rules? Wed Mar 30, 2016 4:32 am • by MacOCD
We have some very complex Hazel rules for auto-filing incoming documents based on content.

From time to time I find some of my scripts have been modified/tweaked by others in an attempt resolve certain situations, sometimes with unfortunate results.

Is there any way to lock/protect my Hazel scripts so only I, or someone else I authorise can modify them?

Thanks,

Mark.

"Others"? Do you have other people using your account or do you not have accounts set up on your machine?

I'm not sure it would work but you can try going into Library/Application Support/Hazel under your home folder. There you will see various .hazelrules files which you can lock with Finder. Make sure to NOT lock any of the other files in there. Again, not sure if it will work. I think the better solution is not have other people using your account though.

Thanks for the reply.

The Hazel rules are on a dedicated Mac that is accessible by all of us. They're not in my account and there are reasons that other people need to be able to access the account on that Mac. Typically we have Dropbox/OneCloud shared folders that have Hazel rules watching. These folders may have many rules to recognise, rename and file documents.

From time to time the layout of some incoming documents changes and I need to tweak the rules. We have several people who have pretty good OSX skills and occasionally they'll attempt to tweak rules themselves to get everything running again. On more than one occasion though this has resulted in multiple documents getting renamed & filed incorrectly.

Locking those rules down (like I can with a read-only applescript) would be a huge help for me.

I'll investigate locking the .hazelrules files in Finder when we have some quiet time. Others do have the login credentials for that machine, but obscurity would almost certainly block casual tweaking.

I use Hazel so much that I actually describe it to people as something that literally changed my life. It saves me hours every week and mitigates the human errors that inevitably occur with monotonous filing tasks. I can't think of a single repetitive task I still do manually.

Thanks,
Mark.
