my secretary sent me a file in the following format:
A1 October.xls
when she makes a change to the file she renames it
A2 October
and A3 A4...

I keep them in a file folder that hazel monitors.
how do I tell Hazel to trash the old file keeping the new one?

It would be difficult to do it via filename but how about date instead? If you only want to keep the latest one, you can do something like "If date modified is not among the 1 most recent, move to trash".
