I have set up rules to add a tag to a movie file that's been opened in the last 30 minutes (I'm using vlc), and there was no problem when using yosemite. However, it no longer works since I've updated to el capitan. The problem is appears is that the last opened date does not update when I check in Finder. I also checked using the mdld command in the terminal, and the kMDItemLastUsedDate attribute is no where to be found. Do anyone else have the same problem?

The same can be said when using Preview to open a file, the last opened value does not updates. However, textedit does update the attribute whenever a file is opened. So it this app related? Or is it because of the new OS (as mentioned above: it works fine before)?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I suspect it's a combination of things, but it's all on Apple's end. I'm guessing that certain APIs handle this properly (which TextEdit uses) but others don't (which is why it doesn't work with other apps). Unfortunately, Date Last Opened has always been like this to a certain degree but it seems to be getting worse. I suggest contacting Apple about it as it is all handled under the hood on their end.
