recently Hazel has stopped recognizing rules based on the "Kind" criteria (PDF, image, etc). I tested this and added a rule to look for extension (pdf, jpg, etc.), and it works fine. But if I only use "kind", it does not process the files.

Have you checked the logfile for errors? Maybe try enabling Debug Mode to get more details?

Beat me to the punch :D

Also, does it appear to work in preview mode?

One possibility is that Spotlight is not indexing those files (the Kind is derived from the Spotlight index). You may want to double-check that as well.

The logfile doesn't show any errors related to this as far as I can tell.

If I do a "preview rule matches" it does not recognize them either. Spotlight is set to index everything (all items are checked in Spotlight's prefs). Is there somewhere else I can check for this?

If you are ok with using the commandline, you can use the 'mdls' command to dump the Spotlight data for a file. If there is no Spotlight data, all the dumped fields will start with "kMDItemFS".

You can also use the 'mdutil' command to check if indexing is turned on for that drive.

There's also the privacy tab in Spotlight's preferences. Make sure you double-check that.

Even after all that, sometimes things just get a little wonky and you have to make it re-index. You can use the 'mdutil' command or try following this support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409?viewlocale=en_US

Post here if you need more help with any of the above.

Glad to sneak in a forum post early for a change since I'm too often arriving late for the party. :)

Thanks for the info, I will run through those steps when I don't have a deadline :)

I might try restarting the Mac first to see if that clears anything out.

Thanks again!

Quickly: problem solved by a restart of the Mac. Thanks again for the quick followup and detailed help from all.

Sidenote: I noticed Apple Mail wasn't searching properly, and immediately your comment about Spotlight came to mind. The reboot solved both issues.
