Multiple attributes Sun Mar 29, 2015 11:11 am • by 12bruce
Working with music files, looking to make a rule (for example) which is conditioned on "Album is not blank", I see 2 attributes for (seemingly) the same thing:

1. Name: Album
Description: Title for a collection of media, such as a record album
2. Name: Album
Description: Album

Similarly, for Title based rule, I see 2 attributes:

1. Name: Title
Description: Title
2. Name: Title
Description: Title of this item

So far, my rules are working, but the only work when choosing one of the two (seemingly identical) attributes. Confusing. How to distinguish between the two attributes?

That is up to Spotlight. If you do "Get Info" on the file, you should see all the metadata. You'll have to choose the one which works for you but it's entirely possible that two fields have the same info.

Okay - thanks for your reply. I didn't know that this was with Spotlight. I can't see the duplication in "Get Info" (it seems that not all the metadata is shown there), but I can see it when I look at the attribute choices (for a renaming pattern) in Hazel. As mentioned, rule doesn't work for both of the attributes, and so they don't contain the same data.

Are they different types of files? It's up to the Spotlight importer how to assign the values so it may be the case where one of the Spotlight importers for a different type of file is putting it in a non-standard place.

The files in question are flac files.

I can set up a new rule on a folder, set the first condition as "Kind is music", and then, when adding a second condition, scroll to the very bottom of the list - choose "other", which comes up with a list of attributes. That is where the duplication of attribute type arises.

The list of attributes is the same when you bring up that list. It just presents you with every possible attribute in the system. The question is whether different fields are filled out for the same file type.
