Subfolder Rules not working Thu Feb 05, 2015 9:09 am • by kudos
<Note Latest version of Hazel installed>

I see dealing with subfolders is a common problem with Hazel.

I've read the sticky and I've tried everything I can think of but hazel will not do what it should as far as I can tell.

The rule is simple:

If ALL conditions are met
Kind Is Folder
Name Contains <anything i put>

Run rules on folder contents
Move To Folder <any folder>

As far as I'm concerned this should move the contents of the matched folder to the folder specified.

It does not.

It moves the whole folder to the folder specified instead of the contents.

I've checked the log and it throws an error:
--------------------
Rule matched
File moved - This is where it moves the entire folder not the contents
Received error while processing file - The file <folder name> couldn't be opened because there is no such file
The operation could not be completed. No such file or directory
--------------------

It appears to be incorrectly moving the entire folder first, then attempting to access the folder presumably to move the contents, but then failing because it's already moved it.

This is my first attempt at setting up a Hazel rule so maybe I'm missing something, can anyone help ?

Thanks

Read the article again as it warns against doing this. The rule you have is matching a folder so the actions will operate on the folder. You need to have separate rules. One to match folders and others to process the files.

Thanks for responding Mr Noodle,

I have read and re-read many times the sticky but the problem is that it goes into great detail about what not to do, which I see is what I've done, but says almost nothing about what you should actually do.

There's even a screenshot - about what not to do.

The only clue we get is one line in the whole post, which you have repeated in your response:

"The solution is to split them up into separate rules"

But then no example or description about how this is done?

I want to achieve what others seem to want from the sticky.

Monitor a folder that has subfolders, move any file of a particular file type to another folder.

If you can give me a screenshot of the rules required and how they are linked together, to acomplish this, you have another customer, I'll buy a license straight away.

Cheers,

I think I've found the solution by googling some more.

It's not obvious when you start using Hazel that there is rule precedence from top to bottom.

This is how they are linked.

It would be good to update the sticky with screenshots of how this actually works.

Thanks,
