In an enormous directory tree, I have files which need re-arranging. If something goes amiss, is there a way to roll back changes? My other option is to intensively copy the large directory tree and save in another place. Any other ideas?

No good way of rolling back. In general, you should have decent backups. If not, I would copy the folder tree in question before doing anything destructive.
