Ok, don't beat me up too much. I am new at mac and really new at hazel.

I am trying to develop a rule using the Source URL/Address. The problem is when I look in finder at the PDF file I am trying to capture and select "more info" command i I don't see the metadata show anything for Where From

can someone help me try to create a rule for the Source URL/Address?

Is there something I don't have the preferences set up correctly either in finder or spotlight??

I was trying to automate my numerous statements and go paperless.

How would one configure and rule in hazel to create a date the statement was for? for example I would like rename my electric bill Feb 2014....etc.

Only certain programs, like Safari and Mail, generate that metadata so make sure you are using those to download your files.

Usually just includes it for me. Can you send me the link for a sample URL for a pdf you are trying to d/l.

There is an example of a pdf I downloaded. When I command I it brings up the following metadata.

I don't see other than my downloads file where the file came from i.e. Promaster....


I am basically trying to automate my downloads that I do every month i.e. cable bill, bank statements etc

I was trying to use the Source URL/Address for hazel to recognize a pdf i have placed in my download folder from LG&E for example.

But nothing matches because PDF file doesn't show where it came from.

I was trying to duplicate this article.

Ok. Using Safari anyway, if you open that PDF the hover your mouse over the bottom of the dock, the icons appear one of which is to download the doc. When you do it that way, it doesnt seem to store the "where from" info. However, if you open the pdf in safari and then go to File, Save As, and then save to your desktop, it shows the info.

See if that is true for you as well.

wow, you are exactly correct. Wonder why it is set up that way??

I think that broke with Mavericks. I suggest filing a bug with Apple. The more people that do so, the more likely they'll pay attention.

sorry to re-hash, or bring up an old thread. I had the same problem. Googling brought me here. After a bit of experimentation with other Maverick machines, found what I believe is the cause:
If you have multiple volumes on your Mavericks Mac, and you're pointing your browsers to download to an external volume/non-standard download-location, the WhereFrom/SourceURL metadata isn't saved (which is odd, because Mountain Lion and older did this no problem). But if you point the browsers default save location back to the default ~/Downloads, it gets saved properly with WhereFrom/Source URL metadata.

I am using the default ~/Downloads folder, and I've tried downloading the file in every browser I have (Safari, Chrome, Firefox), but the metadata isn't working how I'd imagine it would. When checking the metadata using Get Info on the file after downloading from each of those browsers, I can see that the website is listed there (screenshot below), but somehow it's not carrying over through to the utility and it's rules.


It works fine with just the file-type filter. It stops working though when I append the filter of "Where from," which is integral to how I want my files organized.
Am I maybe not entering the URL correctly, or choosing the right filter option?
I've tried all of these permutations with no luck on the filter Where From::Contain::"__________________" :

"Where froms" is a list so when using "contain", you have to specify a full item, not just a part of it. It's better to use "Source URL/domain" when possible since you can match on part of the URL or the domain specifically.
