Kind is (movie) Doesn't match anymore Fri Jan 31, 2014 10:19 pm • by flynn
Hello
I have been using some hazel rules for almost 2 years now that do various things with my movies (move, copy to hard drive, rename) and recently, my rules that contain the "Kind is movie" doesn't match anymore. Removing this matches the files (although is matches other files as well) so I have to manually enter "Extension is" and make that for each and every extension that I commonly use. This is really a pain, as I have quite a lot of rules that use this and it is going to take me a long time to actually do this for every rule

Is there an explanation as to why this would suddenly stop working?

(An example of rules with the kind = movie is this, and it doesn't match anymore)

Name {does not match} (anything) - S(any number)E(any number)
Kind {is} Movie
Color label {is not} red
Color Label {is not} yellow
____________________________
(An example of a rule with the extension matching, which works as expected and the same way Kind = movie used to work)

Name {does not match} (anything) - S(any number)E(any number)
Color label {is not} red
Color Label {is not} yellow

if {any} of the following conditions are met for {the current file or folder}
Extension {is} mkv
Extension {is} mp4
Extension {is} avi
Extension {is} m4v
___________________________

Why would this suddenly stop working and force me to match the extension?!

What is the "Kind" when you look at it in Finder and Hazel's preview?

Looking through the finder, the two kinds that I have at the moment are:
Audio Video Interleave (AVI) and MPEG-4 Movie.

In Hazel, it says that both kinds are movies

So the "Kind" field in Hazel's preview says it's a movie? It seems odd to me that "Movie" would be listed there.

Are you able to use the commandline? Could you run the 'mdls' program on those files and post the results?

Whoops. It does seem like the preview does list a more generic "Kind". I'll need to think about whether that is the correct thing to do in this case.

Does the preview indicate that the files match or not? If they do, then there's a problem when running the rules. Check the log and see if there are any errors processing the file.

When I started the thread, the rule would not run on either files, and it wasn't shown in the preview.

I tried the rule again (I have changed absolutely nothing in my rules whatsoever) and for some reason matching the kind with movie seems to work again?! This problem seems to be random. I've had cases before where rules would not match for some reason with my movies but I wasn't able to track it down until now. This seems really weird.

Is it possible that Hazel rules fail to match on a old machine running slowly? Its a Macbook pro 15 inch from late 2008 running on 10.9 *VERY SLOWLY*, that doesn't even have a screen anymore (it is connected to my TV). I use it only to download movies and to watch them, because of how slow it has gotten.

It might be a delay in Spotlight indexing the files, maybe? If it is slow, you can try adding a condition like "Date added is not in the last 1 minute" to make Hazel wait a minute before processing the file. It might be that Spotlight is delayed in generating the metadata so Hazel sees it before then.

I will try that, although sometimes the files stay there for days and don't match even when I run the rules manually much later after they have been added to this folder.

Hi,

I'm facing just the same issue with the last macbook, so I don't think this is a problem of computer speed.

When I checked the files that didn't match anymore, I could see kind are "MPEG-4 Movie" and "AVI container".

Aditionally, I suffer this on images too. Kind of stopped images were "JPEG Image".

Can you also post the rule you are trying to match against it? Also, is it possible to put the file up somewhere where I can download it and check it here?
