Numbering with letter Tue Oct 15, 2013 6:26 pm • by JolinM
Hi,

I'm currently transfering my iPhoto library to a Finder photo management system.
I would really like to number my files with letters, when there is more than one with the exact same time

    2013-09-28 15.30.05
    2013-09-28 15.30.05a
    2013-09-28 15.30.05b

instead of the defaut behavior, where the first file is at the bottom.

    2013-09-28 15.30.05-1
    2013-09-28 15.30.05-2
    2013-09-28 15.30.05

I fould DrDrang post about his system, but it's managed outside Hazel. How could I reproduce this behavior in Hazel?
Thanks for any help

Right now it's only numbers. I considered adding different numbering systems (like letters) though there's been little demand for it. My question, though: what do you expect to happen after you use "z"?

There is nothing after z; z's the end of the road

It's indeed a good question… z, ab, ac, ad… ba, bb, bc…? Not the more elegant, but might work.

In fact, what I'm looking fore is a numbering system where the base one sticks at the top, instead of the current -1, -2.

So you mean that the first one has no number and it starts numbering with the second one? I'll have to consider that though again, not sure how in demand such a feature is.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. What I'm looking for is a numerotation that will place my file 2006-01-22 14.03.57.jpg before 2006-01-22 14.03.57-1.jpg in the Finder column view.

Currently, I have

Image isn't coming through for me but I think I know what you are saying. Hazel can't really control the ordering of stuff in Finder short of renaming so you'll need to work out some trick in how Finder alphabetizes things.

I indeed know that Hazel can't influence the ordering order in the Finder; but Hazel could provide a numeratation system that would be displayed correctly; couldn't it?

I tought of the alphabetic system; but anything that would work is more than welcomed!

I think the problem here is that "-" comes before "." according to Finder's alphabetization. You can try using something else like underscore (_).

BTW, I realized I was assuming you were using the explicit # attribute. If you aren't, you should as you can control the format of the numbering, like what precedes the number and where it is placed.
