sync command difficulties Fri Jul 12, 2013 9:02 pm • by jarifi12@gmail.com
I have a BoxCryptor folder on my desktop that I want to sync to a folder in my documents folder called "synced pdfs". I am continually getting sync error 23 in the log. I have tried every combination of rules including what is referred to in the support section as the basic sync recipe. Is there anything special about trying to sync with a BoxCryptor folder?

Can you post the whole output of the sync action here?

I don't know how to show you the rule I set up. The rule did match the folder I wanted it to execute. But then I got the following error in the log.

2013-07-16 17:38:53.378 hazelworker[1152] [Error] Could not sync file/folder: Could not sync file/folder at Anesthesiology articles to /Users/jarifi12/Documents/All PDFs/Anesthesiology articles.

This is a dropbox link for you to see a pdf of my hazel rule for syncing

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/232 ... yncing.pdf

In short, the Parent Folder is a Boxcryptor volume and the destination folder is a regular folder in my documents. I use Boxcryptor to encrypt my pdfs that I use in DropBox so both my Macs can keep my PDFs in sync and I can add new pdfs from either Mac.

Checking the sticky article about debug mode. Turn it on and try it again. There should be more log output. Once you have that email it or post it here.

One again here is a link to the rule...
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/232 ... yncing.pdf

The rule matches for a file I just entered into the Boxcryptor folder in the subfolder Utilities When I force the rule to run I get the following debug log:

The Boxcryptor folder is unlocked when I attempt this rule run (i.e.. its password is in place and the files are available to view (i.e. they are not encrympted on my computer...only in DropBox).

Thank you for your attempted help.

If it turns out that BoxCryptor is the problem with the syncing rule, let me explain what I am trying to accomplish and ask you and other forum members for any alternative methods to accomplish my goal.

I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro. I am trying to maintain a paperless library of searchable pdf files pertaining to my bills, bank, brokerage statements, etc. I use both computers for this process. For example, when using my laptop and I receive an email notification for my water bill, I download the water bill, (using Hazel and PDFpen) automatically ocr it, rename it by date and file it in the unencrypted BoxCryptor alias folder on my desktop in a folder named Utilities, with subfolder water and sub-sub folder 2013. Boxcryptor itself is on DropBox (encrypted). Therefore my desktop computer syncs via DropBox with the BoxCryptor folder. The new water statement is now on my desktop computer. I want to then sync the BoxCryptor folder (on my desktop computer) to a folderer called “All PDFs” on the desktop computer in order to have all the pdf files I generate on both computers available on this desktop computer. If I generate a pdf file on my desktop, (using Hazel and PDFPen) I automatically ocr it, rename it by date and file it in the unencrypted BoxCryptor on my desktop, which then syncs via DropBox to my laptop. I then want Hazel to sync the Boxcryptor folder on my laptop to a folder on the laptop called “All PDFs”. The only problem is the syncing of the BoxCryptor folder on each computer to each computers corresponding All PDFs folder has generated the error message alluded to in the debug file..

I have thought of using Hazel to sync directly across computers without Boxcryptor and DropBox in between, but I don’t like to leave both computers on the network continuously. I had come upon the Boxcryptor solution since DropBox has had security problems and I don’t want my bank statements and other private info unencrypted on DropBox.

Thanks for any suggestions offered.

What filesystem is being used at the destination of the sync? It seems that whatever it is doesn't support extended attributes that the sync is trying to copy over.

The destination file system is Mac OS hfs+. The destination folder is on my iMac. Hazel works well with the folder except when the parent folder is a BoxCryptor volume.

I don't know much about BoxCryptor but I'm guessing whatever type of volume it is, it doesn't support extended attributes. While I may consider adding options to the Sync action in the future, for now, you might want to ask them about supporting extended attributes since they are becoming more and more important for Mac files.
