Hazel fails to unrar! Mon Apr 15, 2013 8:31 pm • by tmanto02
Hi guys,

I have the following rules setup to unrar movies but it fails every time!

The log says [Error] Unarchive failed: Failed to unpack archive for...

I also tried "open with" MacPAR Deluxe which fails also, however manual unrar works fine

Any idea what i'm doing wrong?

Is this a single rar, or multiple components of a single file?

Does it require a password?

Thanks for your reply,

No password on any of the rar files.

There are multiple files not only the one file. They are in the format of r01, r02 etc... But with only one ".rar" file, so i thought that by recognising the extension .rar it would work!

Any ideas?

It should work with multi-file archives. When it hits the rar file, it will proceed to unarchive using the rest of the parts as necessary. Could you email the rar file in to support?

What if the RAR files require a password?
Can Hazel still do the trick or do I need to extract them with another application?

Hazel can't handle passworded archives so you'll need to do that interactively.

Why dont you use an app like unarchiver? I use hazel to open an archived file using unarchiver -> its less obtrusive and you barely see it running and if password is needed itll just pop out and ask for it.

unarchiver pretty much eliminates any issues whatsoever with the format of rar files

so my rule is
- Kind is Archive

- open with application default (which in my case is unarchiver)

hope that helps

new to hazel and I did as you recommended as it fits my needs perfectly....
except for that the Unarchiver tries to unarchive .dmg files. How do I prevent this with the rule suggested here

'- Kind is Archive

- open with application default (which in my case is unarchiver)'

You'll have to add a rule to filter out dmg files.
