move to Folders Based on variable FIle Name? Tue Jan 29, 2013 1:05 pm • by dpbklyn
Hello and thank you for a great product!

Is there a way to have Hazel move a file to a folder based on the file's name. Assuming that the name is in the same position.

For example If I have a file named 20130128-%CLIENTNAME%_agreement.doc I would like Hazel to move it to a folder called %CLIENTNAME%. I can make a rule where the client name is static, but I would love it if this could be a VARIABLE. So...CLIENTNAME1 would go to CLIENTFOLDER1 and CLIENTNAME2 would go to CLIENTFOLDER2.

Thank you in advance,

Look for "match patterns" in the help. That should do what you want.

I wrote a few tutorials on custom matching in the Tips & Tricks forum. Search for "Custom Matching 101"

Thank you!

I saw those tutorials, I didn't think they would do what I wanted--I will revisit them.
