First day if my trial and I tried searching so pls bear with me.
My main objective is to transfer downloaded music files from Dropbox to my Mac music hdd folder by artist. Then import it to iTunes. Anyway I'm having no problem until hazel moves that file to
Docs/iTunes/iTunes media/music/unknown artist/unknown album
I have it set to
Import to iTunes
Move to folder music
Sort into sub folder with pattern authors > album
The file I was transferring has a artist folder on my Mac prior. Why does the file go to iTunes media, what am I doing wrong?

You can set iTunes to automatically move imported music into folders by Artist and Album - that is what I'd do here.

I'm a little nervous to do that as I have a ton of music files that aren't purchased from itunes sorted into my music folder by artist and album. I'm afraid if I mess with itunes it will change my folder as the actual music files aren't tagged the way it would like.

Alright, so if we're going to do this via Hazel, you're going to have to let us know what "the problem" is with moving to unknown artist/unknown album...
What does Hazel do or not do?

ok I have a music file say nirvana in my dropbox (no problems here Hazel sees it and imports it to itunes. The problem is Hazel then moves that file into docs/itunes media etc. I don't want this, I want it simply moved to my music folder/artist on my hdd.
I wanted to save the time of manually moving the nirvana file to my music folder under artist nirvana and then importing it to itunes. I don't like having all my files in itunes media folder.
Does that make sense?

It sure sounds like iTunes is copying the file and placing in its own directory. When you use "Import to iTunes" Hazel will only identify to iTunes that there is a new media file on the disk. It doesn't force itself into moving the file within the iTunes structure.
That said, I'd check and make sure that your iTunes settings are as you expect them to be - namely you're looking to uncheck the "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding to Library" in the iTunes Advanced Preferences.
Have you checked your HDD music folder? I suspect you will find your files there.

I'll try to keep troubleshooting. Had to take a break as I was getting frustrated lol.
I tried looking in the music folder and it's not there, I used itunes to show the song in finder then more info and that's when it said it was in itunes media. I swear I had itunes media sorting unchecked but that's another thing I should double check.

Its possible that you did not see the edit I made to the previous post a few moments before you posted this reply, so I'll reiterate that you should reverse the order of your actions:
(1) Move to Music
(2) Sort into Subfolder
(3) Import to iTunes
