Changing just the extension in a filename Fri Jun 29, 2007 6:07 pm • by Ayla
Hi

Thanks for a great program so far :)

I would like to make a rule that renames all files starting with certain letters to the same name only changing the extension.

How do I go about doing that?

Maybe someone has a rule example?

Thanks

It depends. If you are running 1.1.5 then you would need to create an Automator workflow or a script to do the actual renaming.

If you are running the 2.0 beta, there is a rename action you can use. The pattern would be something like:

<name>.mynewextension

where <name> is the name token you drag into the field and "mynewextension" is whatever the new extension is.

If you are running the beta, post any replies in the beta forum as I want to keep that discussion there.

Thanks.

@Ayla: Can you give an example of what you mean?

Well, I tried the suggestions here..

But, it doesn't work. I'm using the latest Beta and Leopard.

Example: I download a file called "download.php" - I would like Hazel to auto rename it "download.nzb".

When I use the <name>.nzb pattern Hazel calls the file "<name>.nzb" it doesn't use the name that the file originally had.

PS. Another thing that doesn't work:

I would like to have Hazel rename the file, copy it to another folder and then move it to the Trash.

The two first works, but moving it to the trash doesn't work. Nothing happens.

Maybe it has to do with Leoard?

Are you typing in <name> or dragging in the little blue lozenge thing called "name"? Those blue things are tokens that get replaced with the actual name when it runs. I didn't mean "<name>" literally.

As for the moving to trash thing, could you check the logs using Console.app (located in /Applications/Utilities) and post any errors you find there? It may or may not be Leopard related but the NDA prohibits me from speaking much on the topic.

Thanks.

Yes, I'm dragging the <name> thingie, but it still changes the name to "<name>.xxx".

I see this in console ASL messages:

09/07/07 22.06.32 hazelfolderwatch[4692] sysctl kern.proc_low_pri_io failed
09/07/07 22.06.32 launchd[129] Background: Aqua: [0x0-0x1b01b].com.noodlesoft.HazelHelper: Standard out/error: 2007-07-09 22:06:32.065 hazelfolderwatch[4692:10b] sysctl kern.proc_low_pri_io failed

And this in console messages:

09/07/07 22.06.32 hazelfolderwatch[4692] sysctl kern.proc_low_pri_io failed

Anywhere else I should look for error messages?

It's renaming it with the angle brackets (<>)? That is really strange. I don't know where that could be coming from.

Could you send me a copy of the rule? Use the contact form here: http://www.noodlesoft.com/support.html.

Also, do you have Tiger running anywhere? I'm wondering if this still happens there. As for those log messages, I'll have to look into it but I suspect it's not related.

Thanks.

Ok, I finally got around to installing the Leopard seed (been in the midst of shuffling my machines around) and I am getting the same behavior. This does not seem to happen on Tiger.

I can't really say much more about this because of NDA but feel free to email me if you need further assistance on this. Thanks for the report.
