Could someone help please...

I have set a rule up for my drop box, for it to import music files to my iTunes. It doesn't seem to work (I even added a rule to watch for .mp3 files but still no joy. Other rules on other folders seem fine. My error log looks like this

2007-06-28 11:19:57.732 hazelfolderwatch[588] Processing directories: ("/Users/andy/Public/Drop Box")
2007-06-28 11:19:57.741 hazelfolderwatch[589] Processing directories: ("/Users/andy/Desktop")
2007-06-28 11:19:57.789 hazelfolderwatch[588] Found 'brok' file.
2007-06-28 11:19:58.191 hazelfolderwatch[589] SOS Band - Just Be Good To Me.mp3: Rule Newly Added Files matched.
2007-06-28 11:19:58.192 hazelfolderwatch[589] Could not set catalog info: /Users/andy/Desktop/SOS Band - Just Be Good To Me.mp3
2007-06-28 11:20:00.826 hazelfolderwatch[588] Found 'brok' file.
2007-06-28 11:20:13.777 hazelfolderwatch[590] Processing directories: ("/Users/andy/Public/Drop Box")
2007-06-28 11:20:13.807 hazelfolderwatch[590] Found 'brok' file.
2007-06-28 11:20:15.963 hazelfolderwatch[592] Another hazelfolderwatch process is processing this directory. Exiting.

As a new user in evaluation mode, I really would like to get this rule working, folks always dropping tunes in my drop box. S it the folder perhaps?

Many thanks

I did a little further testing.

1. Dragged one of my own music files from my library into the drop box and the rules worked.

2. Dragged a music file in there sent to me by a colleague, to my desktop, and then dropped it back into the Drop Box. And It still didn't work.

all a bit confused!

Just wondering what the permissions are on the files that colleagues have sent you? Do they differ from the permissions of your own music files? That might account for the report that it can't set the catalogue info.

That said, I'm no Hazel Pro!

Yes they do. The files sent to me have a read only access and owned by nobody, however my own music files and read & write access.

Having said that, I changed the permissions on the file that was sent to me; no joy.

I even changed the permissions on the Drop Box folder to read & write for my user. Still no change...

Any other ideas would be great...I'm sure I'm missing something really obvious!

One thing to check is whether you can do something like change the color in Finder itself. If it doesn't work there then there is some property on the file preventing it from being changed.

Also, those messages about 'brok' indicate that at least some of the files are marked busy. It's usually a temporary state set by Finder when copying stuff but if you find that the copy has finished and it's still being seen as 'brok' then maybe something is wrong.

In any case, let me know if any of the above clear things up or if you find anything new.

thanks for the pointers, here are the results:

1. I can change attributs of the files in my drop box, such as colour

2. When I run the rules again, my error log shows the following...

2007-06-29 15:51:00.494 hazelfolderwatch[444] Processing directories: ("/Users/andy/Public/Drop Box")
2007-06-29 15:51:00.631 hazelfolderwatch[444] 01 Changes.mp3: Rule Music matched.
2007-06-29 15:51:19.436 hazelfolderwatch[446] Another hazelfolderwatch process is processing this directory. Exiting.
2007-06-29 15:51:21.637 hazelfolderwatch[445] Processing directories: ("/Users/andy/Desktop")
2007-06-29 15:51:21.672 hazelfolderwatch[447] Processing directories: ("/Users/andy/Library/Mail Downloads")
2007-06-29 15:51:21.716 hazelfolderwatch[448] Processing directories: ("/Users/andy/Desktop/Downloads")
2007-06-29 15:51:40.472 hazelfolderwatch[450] Processing directories: ("/Users/andy/.Trash", "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/.Trashes/502")
2007-06-29 15:51:47.022 hazelfolderwatch[450] Watch paths have changed. Spawning process to fix.
2007-06-29 15:53:01.011 hazelfolderwatch[444] Error adding file 01 Changes.mp3 to itunes: {
NSAppleScriptErrorBriefMessage = "AppleEvent timed out.";
NSAppleScriptErrorMessage = "iTunes got an error: AppleEvent timed out.";
NSAppleScriptErrorNumber = -1712;
NSAppleScriptErrorRange = <00000000 00000000 >;
}

And then after deleting the other rule for my Drop Box, relating to trashing old files, I got the following error log:

}
2007-06-29 15:57:34.049 hazelfolderwatch[459] Processing directories: ("/Users/andy/Public/Drop Box")
2007-06-29 15:57:34.353 hazelfolderwatch[459] 01 Changes.mp3: Rule Music matched.
2007-06-29 15:59:34.725 hazelfolderwatch[459] Error adding file 01 Changes.mp3 to itunes: {
NSAppleScriptErrorBriefMessage = "AppleEvent timed out.";
NSAppleScriptErrorMessage = "iTunes got an error: AppleEvent timed out.";
NSAppleScriptErrorNumber = -1712;
NSAppleScriptErrorRange = <00000000 00000000 >;
}

I hope this shines some light!

Thanks

Andy

It looks like Hazel is trying to talk to iTunes to import the files but iTunes is not responding. Is iTunes running and if so, is it hung or not responsive in any way?

iTunes is fine. I have it open pretty much all the time, and I never have a problem with it. Checked my preferences and nothing appears wrong.

So do you think it is a local problem, with my Mac?

Update: The same rule works fine on another folder

Interesting. So it works fine in general but not when monitoring your DropBox? I'll play with it and see if I can get similar behavior. Let me know if you find out anything new.

Update: just tried it and it works for me (dropped file into Drop Box and it got imported into iTunes successfully). I'll think about some other diagnostic or test you can do.

The rule does work if I drop a file into the drop box from elsewhere on my mac. It doesn't work if somebody else puts the file there from another mac.

apologies if I didn't make that clear before (not sure if it makes a difference).

I'm on my holiday for a week now, so I'll catch up with this later, but thanks for your help Mr Noodle.

Testing this out, I've figured out a couple things.

- It seems that Spotlight is not indexing the files dropped into Drop Box. So if you are filtering against something like "Kind is Music", it won't work.
- Changing the rule to "Extension is mp3" did work for me.

I'll keep poking around. Another random thought: is your iTunes library huge and does it take a while (more than a couple seconds) to import a file?
