How To Sort PDFs Into Specific Folders Sat May 24, 2025 9:55 am • by pianoguy007
Hi all,

I'm new to the software, I've just downloaded the trial version today and am looking to execute a command that will save me a lot of time in my job. I am hoping that somebody might be able to help guide me, and I'd be very grateful!

Essentially, I need to sort a variety of PDFs with different musical instrument names in the filename and sort it into a corresponding folder. For example, I often need to sort PDF's with, for example, 'Flute 1' in the filename, and then sort it into a separate folder called 'Flute 1'.

. This would need to be done for a variety of instruments. IE Violin 1, Horn 2 etc. I just wondered how this would work in Hazel, when the filenames differ from one PDF to the next.

For example, here are a couple of situations where 'Cello' is in the filename, but appears differently and in both lower case and upper case.

Mega Love - 23 - Violoncello
Eye Of The Storm v2 Bbmin - CELLO

The above files would be each in separate files and then would need to be sorted into another single folder called 'CELLO'.

Is there a simple way to do this, and if so, would anybody be able to guide me? I'd very much appreciate it!

Thank you all!

If there's a limited set of instrument names, you could use Hazel's table attributes (look them up in the manual). You can create a table with one column being all the different instrument names and the other column being the actual folder name you want to sort it into. You can create a condition to match against the first column, the sort into subfolder using the second column.
