permissions error message from old drive

so I just bought Hazel to embark on a data preservation project. I using Hazel to copy just the photos and videos off of my old computers hard drives and put them into folders on a new HDD seperated by year. Hazel is great for this!

The issue I am encountering though is when I put in an old HDD and selected the folder and set up the rules it ran and spit out this error:

2025-01-02 19:32:05.381 hazelworker[17762] DSCF9760.JPG: Rule Photos 2016 matched.
2025-01-02 19:32:05.538 hazelworker[17762] Error copying file from /Volumes/OLDDRIVE/Backups.backupdb/CHILLCOOLDUDES’s MacBook Pro/2021-01-06-011217/Macintosh HD/Users/CHILLCOOLDUDE/shenanigans/DSCF9760.JPG to /Volumes/2025backups/photos/2016/DSCF9760.JPG: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=513 "“DSCF9760.JPG” couldn’t be moved because you don’t have permission to access “2016”." UserInfo={NSSourceFilePathErrorKey=/Volumes/2025backups/.TemporaryItems/folders.501/TemporaryItems/NSIRD_hazelworker_BTN7gL/DSCF9760.JPG, NSUserStringVariant=(

), NSDestinationFilePath=/Volumes/2025backups/photos/2016/DSCF9760.JPG, NSFilePath=/Volumes/2025backups/.TemporaryItems/folders.501/TemporaryItems/NSIRD_hazelworker_BTN7gL/DSCF9760.JPG, NSUnderlyingError=0x6000016b29d0 {Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=13 "Permission denied"}}

Hazel has full disk permissions on my laptop, and when I click "get info" on both of the external drives, I set the "sharing & permissions" custom access to "Read & Write" for every option (me, staff, everyone, etc., all the defaults) and yet it is continuing to spit out the same error in the log and not copy my files from the one drive to the other.

I found if I first copy and paste the folders and files from the old HDD to my new HDD, then let Hazel run on that folder it has no issues with permissions, except it kind of defeats the convience of running hazel on my old drives to just copy and paste all of my old files.

What do I need to do to set the permissions or whatever to let Hazel look and copy files directly from the old HDD to my new one!?!

Thanks guys!

It looks like regular file permissions (the ones you can see at the bottom of the "Get Info" window). If you try and move (not copy) a file off the drive, do you have to enter a password?

hey no its not, I've set all of those permissions to read and write. it only appears to be happening with these files within the /Volumes/OLDDRIVE/Backups.backupdb/. I'm not given any password entry prompts.

Is it the same user? Sometimes other volumes are owned by a different username.
