Sorting files into folders based on the first 3 characters

My apologies for posting this given the amount of information about this topic however I'm having a difficult time grasping it!

I have images that I'd like to be sorted into new folders based on the first 3 characters of their file names.
The files are named in this format:
001_1.jpg
001_2.jpg
002_1.jpg
002_2.jpg

For this I'd like all of the the 001s to be in a folder named 001, etc.
I've tried creating custom tokens and have made a bit of a mess.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
