Hazel leaving empty folders in trash? Fri Jul 27, 2012 10:53 pm • by TheOneTrueRobb
Hi y'all,

Wondering if anyone's seen this phenomenon: Hazel empties a folder at the pre-set time, but leaves the folder itself in the trash, empty.

I'm on a 2.66 mHz 8-core tower, running Snow Leopard. The folders in question are generally in the 5-9 GB range, am now testing with smaller sizes.

Thanks....

Oh, and I'm running Hazel v. 3.0...

Console is reporting that Hazel is...well, I'll let Console tell it...

The folder is named "MARTY copy". Hazel has removed the files in the folder, but can't/won't remove the folder itself. All permissions are set to Read/Write.

It appears you have a permissions issue. You need to go in and change the permissions so you can remove it. It might require that you have admin access, depending.

Yeah, I'm having a lot of Permissions hassles these days. It's a pain...I might finally upgrade to Lion just to fix this #$%^%^&* Permissions thing....

You could also go into Disk Utility and repair permissions for your whole disk from there.

Same problem, different user:

Code: Select all
2013-03-09 09:06:05.889 hazelworker[94416] File GPGMail.mailbundle has been sitting in the trash for too long. Purging.

2013-03-09 09:06:05.913 hazelworker[94416] [Error] Could not remove file: File GPGMail.mailbundle could not be removed from the Trash.

I've got six files in the Trash with this problem. I had to add myself to each with read & write access, since I didn't appear in the Sharing & Permissions section of the file's info. I also repaired permissions on the volume. However, I'm still getting a permissions error.

Obviously not a Hazel issue, but I wonder if anyone has additional suggestions?

Make sure to apply the permissions to all it's subfiles. Is it only those files or is Hazel not able to remove files from the trash in general? Also, do you have Hazel set to delete files securely?

How do I apply the permissions to subfiles? The Get Info window doesn't appear to allow me to do that.

Hazel is deleting files normally.

I'm also noticing some other errors:

In the first instance, neither Instashare (1.0.6) nor Interarchy exist in the trash (although other versions of Instashare do). I've revealed hidden files (using TotalFinder) to confirm this.

Hmm, how about quitting TotalFinder and seeing if that changes anything? Also, using normal Finder, does emptying the trash work?

Quitting TotalFinder, no change. But Finder is able to delete them all.

Are there any symlinks involved? Is your trash a symlink or anything leading up to it?

Nope. Of course, now that Finder deleted everything Hazel has nothing to do with the Trash. :D

I still run into this from time to time. But while looking at the logs while troubleshooting another issue, I noticed that presence of an exception that wasn't there before:
