automated archiving - how? Mon Jun 11, 2007 6:28 am • by crispin
hi folks

i'm primarily trying to use Hazel to automate archiving for me.

i have a number of archive folders - and what i want to happen is that when i dump files in those folders, they get zipped up in the background.

i can get hazel to do this by creating a rule that 'any file' does 'create archive'. It works fine if i 'Run Rules Now' but Hazel doesn't do it automatically - and the help is a little rudimentary is helping me on this eg. an example script.

any ideas?

thanks

One place to start is to check the logs. You can view them using Console.app located in /Applications/Utilities. Watch the logs while doing both a "Run Rules Now" as well as just dropping a file in there.

Also, could you provide more details on your setup? Things such as the relationship between these "archive folders" and the actual folders being monitored? Is the monitored folder a parent of these folders or the actual folders. Are you adding files to the folder being monitored or a subfolder?

In any case, let me know what you find and we can go from there.

automated archiving - how? Tue Jun 12, 2007 9:56 am • by crispin
hi mr noodle

thanks for replying. this is where i'm at;

When i open Hazel in the System Prefs the Console Log is:

launchctl: opendir() failed to open the directory
nothing found to load
2007-06-12 14:37:09.616 System Preferences[3817] Could not load launchd config for HazelHelper
launchctl: opendir() failed to open the directory
nothing found to load
2007-06-12 14:37:09.708 System Preferences[3817] Could not load launchd config for folder: /Volumes/home/Documents (on home)/crispin docs on home/Centre for Human Ecology/MSC/mod 1/archive
launchctl: opendir() failed to open the directory
nothing found to load
2007-06-12 14:37:09.759 System Preferences[3817] Could not load launchd config for folder: /Volumes/home/Documents (on home)/crispin docs on home/Centre for Human Ecology/MSC/mod 1/Assessments/assessment archive

If I put a file in the 'assessment archive' folder - nothing happens in the Log, and the file doesn't get zipped.

But if i tell Hazel to Run Rules Now - all unzipped files and folders get zipped up straight away, and the console log does:

Thats it i think

May be you could confirm what an archiving rule should look like.

thanks

Judging by the first set of logs, it appears that Hazel ran into problems loading up the background jobs so it's not actually running (though running it manually will still work).

Could you double-check whether you have a LaunchAgents folder in your Library folder? If it's missing, create it and restart Hazel. Hopefully that should reset things. If the LaunchAgents folder is there and it's still not working, let me know and I'll dig deeper into this.
