Hazel slows down boot process significantly

Hello everyone,
maybe there is someone who can help me with the following.

I'm experiencing two problems, but I think they may be connected so here I am.

I have a Hazel rule that matches the content of a PDF and does two actions:
It renames it based on the content, and moves it into a OneDrive-Folder. The renaming works without further problems (despite being relatively slow), but the file doesn't get moved.
The "Preview Rule"-button shows all green (as indicated by the renaming taking part).

This seems to be the part of the logs that shows the problem:

Code: Select all
2024-03-13 09:08:59.483 hazelworker[7927] [File Event] File renamed: /Users/schoem/Downloads/925-2306917.pdf renamed to /Users/schoem/Downloads/2024-02-26-925-2306917-4500008446.pdf.
2024-03-13 09:09:29.126 86Z3GCJ4MF.com.noodlesoft.HazelHelper[746] Worker process for folder /Users/schoem/Downloads did not check in.

(See also the time difference between those two actions. There is nothing between those entries.

This is the first problem. Related to it, and even more problematic, is, that since the installation of Hazel my Computer takes a really long time to boot up. I unlock FileVault with my login password, and then the computer stalls relatively long until boot up. In the system logs there is nothing written down for minutes (sometimes hours), it feels like the longer the computer was turned off, the longer the boot process takes. If it was just over night, it takes about two minutes, if it was a few days off the boot up takes something like two to three hours.

I did several clean installs (without using any kind of backup), and I can reproduce this issue. Last time I didn't install hazel for two weeks without any problems, and as soon as I installed and opened it the first time the problem started again. I think those problems are related, as I don't have those problems on my other computer.

I'd love to get some help, and can provide you with other logs if needed.

Best
Morgan

Hazel doesn't get started until after you log in so it shouldn't affect the boot process.

The log error indicates that somehow the folder in Hazel is disconnected from the actual folder. Try the following process:
- Export the rules for that folder
- Remove the folder from Hazel
- Add the folder back into Hazel
- Import your rules back in and re-enable.

Thank you for your reply. I did the steps above, the result looks similar

Also, the Hazel process seems to pick up the file multiple times. The rename took place three times, but the file didn't get moved. I'v added a few more logs, in case that helps.

Oh, you have a loop. You need to add conditions to the rule so that the renamed file does not match that rule again.

Which brings me to my initial problem, that the file doesn't get moved properly.

I have done more testing, and found out, that I not only need to re-add the source folder but also the target folder where the file should end up.

I'm posting this, in case anyone else experiences the same problem. It's a bit of a bummer, as I now need to remove the move-action on all my previous rules and re-add it again, which is a bit time consuming. Maybe a chance, to delete some unused old rules.

If the folders changed, you can use the Replace folder function (located under the Folder menu).
