Renaming and Sub folder creation Problems Wed Feb 02, 2022 12:54 pm • by Bee Mungus
I am getting some weird results with my Hazel filing rules. When I drop a set of files into the watched folder it should rename each one using the Creation date which I have set using Lightroom if it is a scanned photo, or it defaults to the date and time the picture was taken.

What I get is every photo being renamed 1969 with the appropriate extension and it is then filed in a folder called 1969 instead of being renamed and filed by the creation date.

I have verified the creeation dates do exist as I have assigned them by using Image ExifEditor.

Here are my rules;[**I can't seem to upload or share images directly so I have included links to each file]

Select the file in Finder and do "Get Info". Make sure that the content created date is actually visible there. If not, it's not visible in Hazel either. The 1969 date usually indicates that the date is blank.

Thanks for that tip, I checked and some Content Created fields were indeed empty.

Follow- up question, How do I get those photos sorted into a folder structure such as;
Code: Select all
->Year
    ->Month
         ->File

I'm using the "Sort into Subfolder" with "Date Creatred" for my pattern choice. Do I need to then to add another "Sort into Subfolder" action?

You can use one Sort into subfolder action. In the pattern, you can drag in the date attribute three times. Separate them by the path separator (▸) and edit the format of each one to only show the part of the day for each level.
