Embedded in what? An email?

I would really love to solve this as well. There's surprisingly little info on offer on the interwebs about this. I sort of cooked something up with Mac Automator combined with a rule in Mail, but it's really clunky and involves:

1. Create a rule to move relevant messages to a subfolder in mail (which I DON'T want to have to do!)
2. Create an Automator workflow which finds attachments in UNREAD emails in that folder and copies them to "Downloads".
3. Save the above workflow as an "Application"
4. Create a clendar event to run at set interval and choose "Open File" as the Alert mechanism...opening the above application
5. Run the Hazel rules on the downloads folder

Step 1 seems to be necessary because running the workflow on the Inbox (with '000's of messages) takes too long
Step 4 seems to be the only way to "Automate" the extraction to the downloads folder, but it's not what I want - I don;t want it scheduled, I want it "triggered" by the arrival of the mail (and I don't want to "schedule" this event in calendar every 5 minutes!)

I'd love if people could share their tips and techniques on how to do this. Basically, I just need for the email's arrival to trigger the Hazel rule. There doesn't seem to be a logical folder in Finder where mail attachments land (although there must be one!). Presumably, if I can identify that folder, I'd just run the Hazel rule on that? I'm on Mac OS Big Sur.

You'll need to do something in Mail to save off the attachments. Mail does have its own rule system so maybe you can rig something up there.

There's no way to move/copy/save attachments using the in-built rules engine in mail (not that I can see!). It can execute an AppleScript, so I've gone searching through a number of forums where people have written AppleScripts to extract the attachments. I can't get any of the scripts to work - you can see in these discussion forums the number of people trying to make this work and using scripts that others have written, but nothing seems to work reliably. If anyone here has cracked this, I'd be grateful for help. This would unlock a whole new level of automation when combined with Hazel!
