File Order Sun May 30, 2021 10:54 am • by joshhattan
Hello,

Can you clarify what order files in a folder are being processed (ie. by name, date created, kind, etc.)? I am attempting to rename product photos by incorporating the parent folder structure in the name to achieve a naming convention of:

brand-item-color-#.ext

On an item with multiple photos, the photos go into the folder named in a sequential order (1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg) that I want to maintain with the use of the counter option in "with pattern":

Rename with pattern: source folder <-> extension (use path from monitored folder, replace "/" with "-")
Rename with pattern: name - # extension

However, the rules do not appear to process the files in order of file name. Are they processed in some other sequence?

Thanks for your help,

Josh

The order in which files are processed are determined by the operating system. With HFS, it used to be alphabetical order but that changed with APFS, which is fairly random.

If you want to keep that number, use a custom attribute to match that part of the name and re-use it in the rename pattern.
