I upgraded from Hazel 4 to 5 and it has not gone well.
I am running v 5.03 (2094) on Big Sur 11.1
I have used Hazel for years, starting with version 3.

I clicked on the install DMG icon and selected the option to move it to applications.
On the first attempt, it did not remove the sys pref pane. I deleted and re-installed, and it deleted it the second time.

The current state is:

When I open the Hazel app, after a few seconds, it posts a yellow banner: "Hazel has been stopped"
Activity monitor shows Hazelhelper (not responding)
I press the "Start hazel" button
If I mouse over the Hazel icon in the menu bar, I usually get the beach ball and no response, and (in activity monitor) the helper process is (not responding)
Pressing "Run the rules now" on my download directory which has 20-ish rules takes tens of minutes to complete.

The Hazel rules occasionally will run.
I have tried a clean install of Hazel and still have this issue (the new install still knew which directories to monitor so I missed some file).
Hazel has "Accessibility" and Full-disk Access permissions.
I reinstalled Big Sur.
I have added a NAS recently, so my Mac now has several SMB mounts.
I disabled App Sweep and, for awhile, thought that solved the issue.

What is the best way to get Hazel in a useful state?

If HazelHelper is stalled (not responding), please do the following:

- Launch Activity Monitor.
- Select HazelHelper
- Do "Sample Process"
- Email in the output.

OK. I use automount and one of the mount points in the /etc/auto_xxx files was incorrect, so the directory was not mounted.
I fixed the mount connection and Hazel is happy.

Network mounts do change (at work, this has happened several times this year). It would be nice if Hazel would not get hung up on this, or at least notify you that it is having an issue. Or can you tell it to ignore mounts?

In this case, all Hazel is doing is trying to access the path, possibly to check its metadata. It doesn't know anything special about it (and any attempt to find out would probably entail accessing it). Accessing it results in a hang which ends up not reporting any error.

Can I specify Hazel to ignore a path?
Does Hazel monitor all paths due to the app sweep feature?

What path is it? Is Hazel monitoring a folder under it?

did not go well for me either...

During install, was asked whether I wanted to remove prefpane, which I said I did. It was put into the Trash and I subsequently emptied the trash once the install of Hazel 5 was complete... However, Apple Menu > System Preferences and the prefpane is still there for Hazel 4. What should I do?

This does not appear to be impacting Hazel 5 executing my rules though....

I installed 5.05 today. After installing I tested a bit and rules would not execute at all. Checking the Console log I saw that there seemed to be a permissions issue on the Trash folder and a bunch of folders could not be found?

I should also mention that I selected that the Hazel preferences icon be removed from the preferences pane by the installer. But it was not removed so I removed it manually.

I rebooted the iMac and tried again. Still no joy. Rules would not run. Then I emptied the Trash manually and the rules started running. Not sure what was going on but it seems good now. I'm sharing this in case it helps others.

This really should be a separate thread as it's a different problem.

Go through your folders and do the following for each:
- Export your rules
- Remove the folder from Hazel
- Add the folder back in.
- Import your rules and re-enable as necessary.
