I just migrated to a new computer (Mac mini) where I have my Users folder on an external drive.

This causes all Hazel rules referencing paths in my user folder to break. They seem to be absolute paths, rather than relative.

It took a short while to go through and fix each one. It would be good if this could be less painful for others.

Are you referring to the folders being monitored or the destination folders of the rules? If the latter, you could have used the relocate folder feature. You can find more details on it in the manual.

But why is it needed at all for folders within my home folder?

Wouldn't storing relative paths, using ~, for anything in my user folder be a better approach?

It does store relative paths but depending on how the migration was done, it's possible it lost tracking.
