I updated Hazel to the current version but Hazel did not start anymore afterwards. I uninstalled Hazel and reinstalled. That made the Preferences application hang. Restarting Preference and using "Start Hazel" in the Hazel pref pane has no effect.

How are you able to click on "Start Hazel" if the pref pane is hanging?

Could you check the console logs? Just launch Console, which is located in /Application/Utilities and look for any messages from System Preferences that might indicate an error.
