Rule stopped working Mon Dec 09, 2019 12:54 pm • by kiant123
Hi,

I have a rule that appears to no longer work and I can't work out why. The rule is set on a folder and should go into subfolders and pick up a pdf and rename it then move it to another folder. Everything is on, nothing paused. When I check the 'preview' against the PDF i get all rules matched. I also have forced the folder to run but the file never moves.

I took a log but not sure if I did it correctly. But here's the folder: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m46z8s8w9cgx ... qYTPa?dl=0

Any ideas?

Can you tell me the name of the file and the time it was added to the folder?

Hi,

So the main folder is 'SaneAttachments' the subfolder is 'noreply@crashplan.com'. The name of the file is GCINIE6426071CGB2019000001852943.pdf and according to my mac date created is 8 December 10:39.

Thanks for looking into this for me.

Is that the only rule you have on that folder? If so, I'm guessing that Spotlight is lagging behind so the rule fails when it is initially added. One thing to try is to add a condition like "Date added is not in the last X minutes" to delay matching and give Spotlight some extra time.

Hi,

No that isn't the only rule working on the folder. There are quite a few.

I just tried adding the 'added not in the last...' and ran the rules on the folder but the file is still not budging.

Any other ideas?

Turn on debug mode as described here: https://www.noodlesoft.com/kb/hazel-debug-mode/

Report back with updated logs after that.

Hi,

I ran debug mode again then went to view log and put the three files in the same folder: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m46z8s8w9cgx ... qYTPa?dl=0

Thanks again for your help.

I'm seeing this in the logs:

2019-12-12 14:18:41.257 hazelworker[3723] DEBUG: GCINIE6426071CGB2019000001852943.pdf: Did not match any rules.

Are you sure it is matching in the preview? It may be worth switching "contain" to "contain match". That will bypass Spotlight and is much more reliable.

Hi,

It was definitely matching all rules. I've put another image in dropbox to verify this. Also I tried switching to contents match but there was no difference. Then I recreated the whole rule again this time putting in the contents match and it still doesn't get picked up. I can't work out what's going on as it was working fine up until in recently.

Hi,

Just an update, in the folders list I pressed the 'eye/preview' button on the main folder and can see the rules are not being run on the problematic sub folder for some reason. https://share.getcloudapp.com/OAuLbEvK

I also created a test duplicate of the 'crashplan' folder (1 crashplan) and it's not running on that either.

After that I put in a random 'untitled folder' and then put the pdf file into that folder then ran the rules on that folder and Hazel moved it as expected. It doesn't like crashplan folders for some reason!

Any ideas why it may not want to run on this folder?

Ah, that folder has a dot in the name. The system interprets that as an extension and might confuse Spotlight, making it think it's a file. You may need to add a condition to your subfolder rule to match those.

Hi,

I noticed that another file has a dot in the file name and it still runs on that subfolder. See image: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8b19ofgmg1vvh ... 0.png?dl=0

Also I tried adding a rule in my subfolders rule that if the name is a folder, or has a . in the name to run (https://www.dropbox.com/s/xkic3xcyxnhme ... 6.png?dl=0) , but nothing seemed to happen. Can you suggest a rule to try?

Have you tried the rule preview? You should be able to see there why it's failing to match.

I did as you suggested and ran a preview on the file, for some reason Hazel doesn't think the folder is a 'folder' so it didn't match the old rule.

I added another rule and finally the file did budge. Here's the new rule that moved the file (it also shows the failed rule match): https://www.dropbox.com/s/p2dghw5tyyi2l ... 6.png?dl=0

If you click on the red X, it will show you the Kind that Hazel sees (which is usually derived from Spotlight).
