Scenario:
Running Catalina 10.15.1, Hazel 4.4.2. Hazelhelper enabled in security control panel for full disk access

  • Navigate to a document in safari whose URL actually points to a PDF.[/li]
  • Use "Save As" in Safari to safe this document directly into a folder observed by Hazel. Rule execution in this folder is currently paused.
  • Go to Hazel in control panel and navigate to the folder in question in left sidebar
  • Click on "Eye" button to see what rules might do.
  • "Eye" view lists the file with a red triangle with exlamation mark stating: "Could not import text from /Users/dolf/Documents/Paperless/ To be Filed/viewdoc.pdf."
  • Click on the rule (on the right side) that was expected to match (even though it did not in the "eye" view)
  • Click on the pencil icon to bring up rule details
  • Click on preview and select the file in question
  • Observe rule stating a match
  • Cancel this view
  • Click the "eye" view again and now observers to expected rule to match and the red triangle error message to be absent

This would appear to be a bug, preventing correct handling of the file in question in an automated fashion.

How does it behave when it actually runs?

It seems to run in the manner the eye would indicate after the "manual preview" trick. Defeats the usefulness of the eye though: I want to see what is going to happen before I run, to catch unexpected rule matches.

The "eye" also shows how things match before being run. When this happens, can you open the file in Preview and are you able to select the text in the file?

I'm not sure if this issue was ever addressed, but I can report the same error as the OP.

Does your case follow OPs example exactly or is there some variation?
