I have been having a problem where Hazel will not automatically process rules on my home Mac. Basically, I download the files. The rules work by they stay unprocessed.

One way to trigger the rule is to open it in Preview. Once I close Preview, the rule runs, and processes.
This seems to happen all the time.

Even if I run Rules Now, it doesn't seem to trigger it. However, once I open in Preview, it automatically works.


I did find this in my System Log:

Which version of Hazel? There was a new release recently

Can you share the exact rule you have created, so people can try to reproduce it?

UNIX error exception: 17 - This error means 'File Exists', but really doesn't shed any light on the issue you're having (and may not even be related).

Preview always seems to update or touch various files simply when previewing a document. It drives me crazy sometimes, but it may be why your rules are suddenly kicking in after Preview touches them.

Are you using "Contents contain" in your rules? If so, then it might be a Spotlight issue. As noted, opening a file in Preview for some reason will trigger certain things, like possibly indexing the file in Spotlight. You might want to look into diagnosing your Spotlight configuration in that case.

Alternatively, you can try using "Contents contain match". It bypasses Spotlight but is a bit more resource intensive.
