Metadata Tue May 21, 2019 10:23 am • by lynwyn
Hey there! I am a new user. Does Hazel have the ability to read basic metadata IPTC content when applying rules? We process thousands of images out of Capture One with changing naming conventions that need to go into one of seven locations. I started with applying a color tag in Capture One and exported that color tag upon process, but it appears to only be within the metadata and not Finder.

Again, I am a brand new user, so I might just be missing something obvious, and would greatly appreciate some tips. Thanks!

Hazel relies on Spotlight to access metadata. So, if it's not provided by Spotlight, then Hazel can't match against it. There are some exception but I suggest using the preview feature to see how different attributes look from Hazel's POV to see if Hazel can see it properly.

I don't know about Capture One, but if it has a way of setting color labels, I suspect it's not the same as Finder's labels, as those are not stored in the file (which IPTC does).

So I am having issues with Hazel matching headlines. I have some rules that function fine using headlines, but then a new rule on the same file will say the headline is not matched. I am applying the headline in Capture One or Bridge, but Spotlight is reading it as well. Love the program, but I find it hard to troubleshoot as a new user. Any thoughts?

Can you post screenshots of this? I don't know anything about a headline attribute.

If you click the red X, what does it show as the value there?

Not Matched: Headline
Not Matched: Description

I tried both independently.

Clicking on the red x will show a pop-up. There it will show the value for those fields.

Yes, it says not matched headline

But the headline filed is completed in the metadata

Can you post a screenshot of the pop-up with the value? I need to see that to see what Hazel sees as the headline.

Can't view that without a login. Can you post a public link?

So, those fields aren't being exports/indexed by Spotlight. In that case, you'll probably have to use a script in conjunction with a program (maybe exiftool?) to get at that data.
