Delete auto backup files Thu Jan 10, 2019 3:51 am • by Superoo
Hi.

Sorry but I am a Hazel newbie.

I would like to delete backup files made by coreldraw in my client folders - there are hundreds of them under one folder called 'Client Files'.

The backup file names contain 'backup' with the extension '.cdr'

I would like Hazel to drill down and find all of these backup files older than 1 month, and move them to the recycle bin.

I have tried many times - and searched for help on subfolders etc but Its a bit overwhelming at the start.

Any help very much appreciated.

Cheers,
chris

Hi,

Thank You for your reply.

I don't have anything now, I deleted all of them because...

I ran my rule and wasn't aware that hazel moved my entire folder structure to the recycle bin.
Then I discovered that you cant empty items from the recycle bin that hazel puts there.
But I was able to move them back from the Finder / Go (trash) area.

So now I'm a bit scared of it now to say the least.

I have searched and searched but I cant find anything or work out a way to just delete any files (Not Folders) which meet these criteria...

1- In any depth subfolder under CLIENT FILES/
2- Filename contains "backup.cdr"

If you can help it would be much appreciated, if not I will probably not use hazel at this stage.

Cheers,
Chris

Well, the subfolders chapter in the manual is critical. You need a rule like that if you want Hazel to find files in subfolders.

And as a separate rule, you need logic to handle the files you want to process. Basically, create this rule as if the files were at the top level (not in subfolders). Then add the separate rule telling Hazel to go into subfolders.

Also, do this on test files until you have it all working correctly.

Sorted at last - critical it seems to put the run rules on subfolder contents action at the bottom.
