Both Individual Rules Match, "All" Does Not? Sun Jun 30, 2013 9:18 pm • by jfield

If I set the rule to "any", it will work, but I don't want that because the date pattern occurs in other files. If I remove either rule, the other detects fine but if I have it set to all and both rules are there, it no longer matches. The file in question is a scanned, OCR'd PDF. Any ideas?

Also during this process, Hazel frequently crashes. I've submitted Error reports you get those when they get sent, or I can attach them in a reply if not.

Thanks!

Just FYI, terminology-wise, I think you are referring to conditions. That whole window represents a single rule.

As for the issue you are seeing, I suspect it's a Spotlight issue. Check out my explanation in this other thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2239

If my problem was the spotlight issue, wouldn't it not match even when there was only one condition?

In other words, individually either of those conditions will match files, and some subset of the ones both will match overlap, but when I set it to all, none of the files match.

If set to "any", only one of them needs to match. If set to "all", then both do. If we assume Spotlight is messed up, then condition 1 matches, but condition 2 doesn't. If set to "any", since condition 1 matches, then the rule as a whole matches. If set to "all", then since condition 2 doesn't match, then the rule as a whole doesn't match. Does that clear things up?

Sorry, I wasn't clear:
"All"
- Condition 1
- Condition 2

Does not match

"All"
- Condition 1 (Condition 2 removed entirely)

Matches some files

"All"
- Condition 2 (Condition 1 removed entirely)

Matches some files - some of them are the same files that matched just Condition 1.

So if each condition works by itself, entirely in its own rule, why would they not work when combined with "All" set if the same files appear to match both conditions independently?

I suggest you email/post specific examples of this. In particular, send in the following:

- Screenshot of Hazel's preview showing this behavior.
- One of the files in question.
- The relevant rules.
