Hazel with a locked-down Control Panel Thu Feb 07, 2013 7:10 pm • by jakewalker
Hi -

My company (traditionally all PCs) has recently let us get Macs at work. I have administrator access to the Mac, but they have installed some profiles, including a profile that "locks down" all of the "Other" System Preferences. As such, I can install, but not access, Hazel.

My support guys, who are new to the Mac, are happy to help me get access, but they don't quite know where to start. Does anyone have any ideas how I can best instruct them to allow me to access (even if temporarily) the locked down system preferences panel? Ideally, I'd love to be able to write/modify rules without having to go through a whole process, but at a minimum, it would be nice to do that. Any thoughts/ideas?

Sorry - - I don't have more details about exactly how they've locked down the system preferences panel.

Thanks -

Do you know how they locked it down? Does the pane show up at all? Where did you/they install it, for your user account or machine-wide? All your settings are stored under your home folder so you shouldn't worry about that part.

I do not know how they locked it down. The pane shows up, but is greyed out. It is installed at /Library/PreferencePanes/Hazel.prefPane. It was successfully installed for all users, but I can't open it. I also can't run the .hazellicense file. If there was a way to interact with it from an app, rather than as a preference pane, I'd be in good shape, I think. Same thing if I could change rules outside the GUI (though that's a bit more of a hassle).

Trying to launch Hazel.prefpane leads to the error message "You can't open the "Hazel" preference pane because it is not available to you at this time. To see this preferences pane, you may need to connect a device to your computer."

Also, have you tried installing it for just your own account (instead of in /Library/PreferencePanes)?
