Folder Sync Between iMac and Macbook Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:12 pm • by Alpencrosser
Hello,

i just purchased Hazel last week and now i've got this problem.

I have an timecapsule with an shared folder on it with the name "SyncTC". And i have an iMac and a Macbook running in the same network, so i want to sync these Macs via Hazel (only a few specific folders).

I will name the Macbook Folder "MacbookSync" and the iMac Folder "iMacSync".

For some testings, i've createt these 3 folders on my desktop.
It would be the best, if this will be a full Sync, that means, if i delete a file (rename) or Folder in Macbook Sync it should transfered to SyncTC and again to iMac Sync.

I've described my problem with some screenshots in this pdf (i hope, i am allowed to link this): https://www.dropbox.com/s/ppmq20rmorpz5 ... t_sync.pdf

Have you got any answers about whats going wrong?
thanks for your support :)

Best Regards,
Manuel

hazel "sync" is a one-way sync. What it sounds like you're looking for is a full two-way sync. I believe that iCloud or Dropbox would be an easier solution than Hazel.

For example, a problem that Hazel would have to solve is:

(1) Rename file on iMac
(2) Rename same file on Macbook
(3) Sync begins from iMac to SyncTC
(4) Sync begins from Macbook to SyncTC

Who wins? Which is the truth table?

Because iCloud and Dropbox handle file change notifications on both sides with a single server, it is easier for them to determine the correct change to propagate to all clients.

Yes, two-way sync is not supported and I would recommend against using Hazel this way. Not only that, but you are trying to sync between multiple locations. It's a complex problem and you are probably better off finding a solution that is specially built for this type of situation but you'd need something that can deal with conflicts as they arise.
