Rules not running, hazel stuck processing trash? Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:36 am • by Skeo
Recently I've been having issues getting hazel to run properly when files are added.

This morning, a new download started in sab at 10:30am ish
this download finished at around 11:45 and sab moved the file from the downloading folder to the completed folder.
My hazel rules are then set to move this file again 5 minutes after it is first added.
But this didn't happen.

The hazel log (http://pastebin.com/nuG4D3Hv) shows that it has recognised the file in the downloading folder and is running the rules (no matches so nothing happens), but then doesn't recognise the file after it is completed downloading and moved by sab.
Hazel seems to get stuck processing my Trash folder for the next few hours. And then stops processing anything.

The last few entries from the log (after 4pm) are when I started to interact with it. First I emptied the trash, then I opened the hazel preferences to check that the rules were matching like they should be (they were). Then a couple minutes after that the rules ran, without being prompted.

I've been having this problem for the last few weeks and have generally needed to manually run the rules to get them to work. This time they worked on their own a few minutes after I checked on them.
Really not sure whats going on here. Possibly a bug from one of the recent updates. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. The log from when it started working again is here: http://pastebin.com/p5Yeip5B
Everything looks the way it should.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling hazel to fix this, and it worked for the next day or so. Then started getting stuck on new downloads again.

There was an update yesterday. Did you install and run that one? One of your logs showed you running 3.0.11 which is the older one.

Also, I can't say much without seeing your rules as well. Please post those or email them in to support. Lastly, check the sticky article on debug mode. That will present much more verbose logs.

I've updated today. Will give it a run and get back to you. Thanks

Same problem again today after updating. File downloaded and an hour plus later it still hadn't processed.
Enabled debug mode and had a look at the log. Not a lot I understood but there was a line that said

Code: Select all
2012-09-01 23:32:26.867 hazelworker[8416] DEBUG: Could not find entry for default_directory in Chrome preference file.

Is this the same error that I was getting a long time ago with firefox?
I opened chrome, manually reset the download folder and quit it. My rules started running.

Now, as I mentioned, the last time my rules had stalled and I opened the hazel prefs, they started running. So I don't know if what I did with chrome made any difference but I'm not getting that error in the log anymore.

Will give it another day and see if things stall again.

I saw this behaviour on my Mac, too. Hazel shows as running but no rules are being processed. Only stopping and restarting Hazel again fixes the problem for a while. I'm running 3.0.12 on 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 (12C35). Same problem on both. Right now I can't send a log, because I'm at work. But if needed I'll get in contact with you after work is done.

Yes, please send in rules and logs. And remember to give me a file to trace. Specify when the file was added to the folder so I can trace through and see what is or isn't working. Thanks.

Was there some resolution to this matter?

Just wondering for my own issues.

Yes, the problem seemed to go away after reconfiguring some rules. Also, please do not assume your problem is the same. There are a ton of different reasons why this is happening so even if I solve it for one person doesn't mean it will be the same for you. If you are suffering from this then please email in the appropriate diagnostics so I can take a look.
