Apply Color Labels to Subfolders Sat Jul 23, 2011 7:38 pm • by rickmacan
Support -

I have read your FAQ on subfolders but I cant get my rule to work:

I have a Top Level Folder that contains various subfolders.
Within these subfolders are various document types like Excel and Word.
I would like Hazel to apply the color label Green to Excel files and the color label Blue to Word files within each subfolder contained in the top level folder.

The idea is as soon as I save or download one of these file types into one of these subfolders Hazel automatically applies the afore mentioned color labels.

How do I do this?

I appreciate your time and help.

Thank you.

I can't tell without seeing your rules but if you mushed it into one rule, then I suggest reading the article again. You basically want one rule as shown in the article (and downloadable from there as well). Then you'd need two separate rules to match Excel and Word documents and color them appropriately. Give that a shot.

Hi Mr. Noodle -

Thanks for the quick reply.

I should have mentioned that I only was applying one rule to either Excel or Word and not mashing them together. Meaning that I made a separate rule for each file type.

I have re-read your FAQ but still cant get it to work. This is my current setup:

Description: "Apply Green Label to Excel Files"
If "all" of the following conditions are met "Extension" "is" "xls"

Do the following:

"Run rules of folder contents"
"Set color label" "green"

What am I doing wrong here? What am I missing.

I appreciate you support.

Cheers.

I figured it out. One basically has to create two separate rules or steps.

Step 1/Rule 1

"Kind is Folder"

"Run Rules on folder contents"

Step2/Rule 2

"Extension is xls"

"Set color label green"

Now I have another question:

Sometimes I feel like Hazel is not updating the rules quickly enough. How fast should this be happening? Sometimes it doesnt update at all and I need to manually run the rules. Another observation is if I im still working in and Excel document for example, Hazel will not update until I have quit out of the spreadsheet. Is this normal?

Cheers

There may be a delay of up to a couple minutes. If you have the document open in some apps (it depends on how the app operates), then Hazel won't operate on the file until you are done with it. I'm guessing that Excel is holding onto a lock on the spreadsheet in question which Hazel sees.
