Retagging and Renaming the PDFs in SubFolders. Tue Dec 09, 2025 4:28 pm • by Artak
Hello Mr Noodle

I have Folder <BILLS> and couple of subfolders inside it like <AmEX>, <CIBC MC>, <BMO MC> and so on. I am downloading Statements of that Credit cards to my <Download> folder (they are PDF Files with specific names like <DAY/MONTH/YEAR AmEX statement> and so on. This is done with Hazel Rule that works fine.
Now the problem. I am making the payments, Stamping <PAID> in PDF Expert app and renaming the file with <Original File Name>+ text <_PAID>. I want to create a rule in Hazel that if it fins _PAID suffex at the end of the file name it will change the RED TAG with BLUE TAG and rename to original name without _PAID. Last rule doesn't' work. What I am doing wrong? Please help. See the attached screenshots for more information

Your image tags aren't properly formatted but I was able to view the images.

Note that the name includes the PAID part so renaming it with (name) doesn't change anything. Look up match patterns in the manual. Using those, you can set up a custom attribute to match the part of the name you want to keep and then use that attribute in your Rename pattern.

Hi again
It seemed to me that my problem was first of all in getting the folders underneath. Bills > Amex folder, CIBC folder, BMO folder and so on. The watching folder is Bills folder and I was using rule like> if kind is Folder than go to subfolders undernith and if name ends with Paid for the pdf files, than set the color label Blue instead of Red. I am not worrying about changing the name at this point.I might add the renaming action later on if everything goes well with labeling.

Thanks

It looks like your subfolders rule is unchecked. You will need to check it for it to do its thing.

So far no Success.

OK here is my goal.In Hazel I want to create a rule that will monitor the Test Folder and if the pdf file name contains PAID at the end of its name than it will replace with nothing (take it out) and set a color label to grey. All the conditions are met but file BC HYDRO 2025-11-27 PAID .pdf does not change the name although I am getting the grey label.Attached us the screenshot. Whats the problem here?

Thanks for any advice.

Why are you including the comment in the pattern? Remember, "PAID" is just as much a part of the name as the rest of it.

Ok Thanks I figure it out. Thanks. It's working now. I am using rename rename with pattern replace text.
