Work with a hidden network share? Thu Mar 24, 2022 4:11 pm • by tekguru
is there any way to copy a file to a network share, something like 'smb://mynetwork/folder' where the destination can be specified without the share actually being mounted (and visible in Finder)?

Basically I want to be able to backup files to network shares without the shared folder on the NAS being visible via navigating to the NAS. I can hide the share from being visible in 'network places' in the share settings, but turning that on also seems to hide it from Hazel.

Well after a lot of experimentation it looks like this is not going to be possible as I can't see any way of entering a network share path..... or am I missing something?

It has to be mounted to be accessed. Not sure how you would expect it to work without being mounted unless you have some odd client that can speak the network protocols outside of the filesystem.

It was what I thought then alas.

With Time Machine for example you can connect it to a non-mounted share on the NAS as long as you enter the full path and credentials. I was hoping to achieve something similar.
